Many people conjure up traditional images of mountains, lochs, castles and whisky when they think of Scotland and those looking for that will not be disappointed. However, Scotland and in particularly the Highlands of Scotland offer so much more to the modern day visitor.

In Lochaber the infrastructure put in place to provide for the outdoor fraternity is fantastic. The town of Fort William, situated on the west coast between Loch Lhinne and the UK's highest summit Ben Nevis is now home to one of the best downhill mountain bike courses in the world. The Gondolas at Nevis Range used by snowboarders and skiers during the winter months now transport mountain bikers to the start of the World Cup downhill course.

The mountains of Lochaber and Glencoe are well known in the UK for providing climbers and walkers with an abundance of routes and mountain summits to conquer. Long distance walks such as the West Highland Way and the Great Glen start or finish here as do several endurance events including the 43 mile footrace Devil O The Highlands. The recently opened Ice Factor in Kinlochleven has transformed the old aluminium factory into a state of the art indoor climbing facility which includes the worlds biggest indoor ice climbing wall. Along with a bistro bar and shop this unique facility is a welcome addition to the area particularly when the weather decides to dampen you down.

Away from the mountains, the lochs, rivers and seas are becoming more and more used by kayakers as well as sailors who make use of the sometimes extreme and other times tranquil waters which flow in this scenic area. The west coast of Scotland also has some unbelievably stunning beaches.

Those in search of Scotlands historical past will find themselves with no shortage of places of interest. The battles between the clans and the "auld enemy" (that's England for those not up on Scottish history!!) will take visitors from Glencoe to Culloden, from Bannockburn to the Isle of Skye. Legends abound here and an incredible amount of people still come to the shores of Loch Ness, north of Fort William, hoping to catch a glimpse of the infamous Nessie.

Lochaber is not all about extreme sports. Fishing in the area is fantastic and there are a selection of quality golf courses in Lochaber. The nine hole Dragons Tooth golf course outside Ballachulish and the eighteen hole golf course in Fort William set at the foot of Ben Nevis are both in spectacular locations and give a backdrop second to none as you play your way round. There is another nine hole golf course at nearby Spean Bridge.

Sunshine Breaks have access to some fantastic accommodation in Lochaber from a four bedroom villa with its own grounds in Glencoe to a lovely family run B&B in Fort William itself.
