Las Alpujarras is the name for the region which lies on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains in the south of Spain. One of the least known and yet stunning areas of Andalucia holds a world of delights for those willing to get out on foot and discover the beauty of this landscape.
You will marvel as you pass through the traditional villages steeped in a bygone era where little has changed since the moors first cultivated the land into terraces hundreds of years ago. Everyday you will see something and somewhere different as you travel through the region. Some walks follow part of the GR7 trans European walking route, another takes you to the far eastern end of the local mountains and the highlight of the week (quite litterally) will be an overnight expedition to Mulhacen, the highest mountain on mainland Spain which sits at 3482 metres.
This is truely wonderful week based at our Mountain Villa Casa Escocia. Each day you will start with a hearty and healthy breakfast before heading out for a days walking around the area. Several of the walks will leave directly from Casa Escocia, the Mountain Villa which sits at 3,500 metres at the top of the village of Nechite. The views from here alone are outstanding and they will undoubtably inspire you to get on your walking boots.
You will stop in a local villages and sample the local tapas or menu del dia (menu of the day). At night the Sunshine Breaks cook Mary will have a fantastic home cooked meal awaiting your arrival. Two of the nights will be freed up for you to wander into the village and enjoy a night out at one of the nearby restaurants. We'll point you in the right direction of the best places to taste the local cuisine.
Your week will consist of three days of walking along the old trails some of which are part of the GR7, two days will be set aside for the push up to the top of Mulhacen and another day will be a "You Choose" day where you can either relax and put your feet up at Casa Escocia, try another activity locally from mountain biking to wine tasting, horse riding to stained glass workshops or you could head out on your own for another walk. the walk up Muhacen will include an overnight stay in a comfortable Refugio or mountain refuge.
The walks will all be guided but there is no problem if you want to head off on your own. We will always pass on our knowledge of the area. All our guides live locally and speak English so you won't have any communication problems.
