Las Alpujarras is a mystical region only recently being discovered as a popular alternative destination to other regions in Spain. The mountains here are the foothills to the high Sierra Nevada. There are many traditional white pueblo villages clinging to its steep slopes, including the villages of Nechite and Valor, which are nestled between two deep ravines at the eastern end of this mountain range.
Casa Escocia is located in Las Alpujarras and provides the mountain base for Sunshine Breaks. This is the perfect spot whether you are seeking adventure or whether you simply want somewhere to relax, kick back and unwind.

Valor was the birthplace of the last Moorish king, Aben Humeya, who led the rebellion of the moors during the 16th century. Every September the village holds a fiesta known as the Moros y los Cristianos, which colourfully re-enacts the this event and is one of the most famous festivals in Spain. In fact fiestas are a big part of life in Las Alpujarras and there always seems to be a village somewhere in the region holding one!! They are great family affairs with all the generations getting together to celebrate, enjoy and have a good time. May through to September are great times for you to visit the area as festivals and fiestas are on in abundance.
See our Spanish Fiesta in Valor (Foam Party) video on Youtube!!
Nechite is a sub district of Valor, which has a selection of bars, restaurants and a couple of shops. A large open air swimming pool provides you with a welcome retreat during the summer months (June - August). It is a truely relaxing part of the country where tradition still holds firm in the lifestyle of the village inhabitants. In the mornings you will hear the shepherds taking their goats and sheep into the mountains to graze and the old men still use their donkeys to carry goods through the narrow streets.
It is a tranquil place where you can easily let life drift peacefully past whilst reading writing or painting. The area inspired the creativity of writers such as Gerald Brenan (South From Granada) and more recently Chris Stewart (Driving Over Lemons/Parrot in a Pepper Tree), both of them writing about their experiences of living in Las Alpujarras.
There are several towns nearby which provide you with a larger choice of facilities and nightlife and the coastal beaches are only around 45 minutes away. There is a huge variety from secluded coves and quaint marina villages to established resorts. Roquetas de Mar, Almerimar and Almeria have stunning beaches, shopping malls and plenty restaurants, pubs and clubs to sample if you wish a night out. Granada city can provide everything else you need, except the beach!!
Casa Escocia is also the base for our mountain activity breaks (see our Adventure page). The house backs onto the Sierra Nevada national park and has many tracks leading high into the mountains. The trans European GR7 path passes right below the house. You will never be short of outdoor activities to do here and our Adventure page describes some of the activities which make this a great place to base yourself to discover and explore the area. We will happily share our knowledge of the area with you and we can also arrange guides/tours should you require them.
