Great conditions in the Sierra Nevada in Granada, Spain

Snowboarding & Skiing in Spain with Sunshine Breaks ...

It may be hard to imagine but with mountains stretching up to almost 3,500 metres (11,500 ft) the Sierra Nevada mountain range provides an incredible setting for Snowboarding & Skiing in the most southerly snow resort in Europe. It is surreal when you realise that it only takes one hour to get from the Sierra Nevada snow resort to the beaches of the Costa Tropical and from the high peaks you can look across the Mediterranean Sea and see North Africa.

Where exactly is it? ... The Sierra Nevada mountain resort is located above the city of Granada in the south of Spain.

When does it open? ... The Sierra Nevada resort opens in early December and runs through to April. This year the resort closed on the 22nd of April, despite the conditions still being excellent for snowboarding & skiing.

Obviously mother nature decides this but last season (06/07) saw the Sierra Nevada resort have some of the best conditions in Europe. Even when the Alps were struggling to keep going, the pistes above Granada were covered throughout the season. If the Snow Gods do decide to take a break then the Sierra Nevada's 400 plus snow cannons kick in and cover the main runs with an abundance of the white stuff.

How big is the resort? ... The Sierra Nevada resort has over 84km's of piste, 79 slopes and a snowboard park spread over 6 different ski areas. The top station sits at 3,300 metres (almost 11,000 ft) and from here you get a vertical drop of over 1200 metres (4000 ft) down to the Sierra Nevada resort town of Pradallano. The slopes cater for all abilities with plenty of off piste opportunities for the adventurous and a massive choice of slopes for beginners, intermediates and advanced riders. There is even a magic carpet for kids learning to snowboard or ski. The Sierra Nevada fun park has a full range of kickers and rails of varying difficulty and some of the best riders in Spain ply their trade here.

It also has everything else required to ensure you enjoy your time on and off the slopes, including creche facilities for children, an ice rink, a cinema and a choice of shops selling and hiring snowboard and ski equipment. The Spanish know how to enjoy themselves and the Sierra Nevada resort has the Spanish laid back attitude stamped all over it. With the city of Granada only half an hour away and the Med just over an hour the location is perfect for a variety of choices.

Where can I stay? ... The incredible city of Granada is at the bottom of the hill, only half an hours drive from the slopes and Sunshine Breaks have a choice of quality accommodation there. This coming winter guests can stay at the luxury Medina Elvira resort just 10 minutes from the city centre. With an 18 hole golf course, pony trekking centre, state of the art gymnasium, shopping centre and much more right outside the luxury apartment, this really is the place to stay. You have the best of everything here being so close to the city centre as well as having snowboarding & skiing nearby and a huge choice of alternative activities.

How do I get there? ... The closest airport to the Sierra Nevada resort is Granada.
